People are faced with decisions every day, and as we get more digital, choices only increase and decisions get harder. Previously, we got our news from newspapers and television; the choices were simple. Today, there are so many online publishers and social media platforms delivering news. For example, how did you come to the decision to click on this article and read it? These same platforms also allow people to be individual content creators, creating even more data.
Choices and data are only going to keep increasing, which often leads to decision fatigue. And this symptom is even more apparent within businesses today. Jack Ma believes that we'll be able to progress to 4-hour work days, thanks to AI. But that's not for another 30 years. Successful entrepreneurs address this today by reducing the complexity of the decisions they have to make in a day; Obama replies to emails with one word - agree, disagree, let's discuss - and like a certain social media mogul who only wears grey hoodies, tees and jeans, Obama wears only grey or blue suits.
According to research, we make about 35,000 decisions a day. It's amazing how much time is saved and productivity multiplied, by keeping things simple or automating them, and removing small "distractions."
What's your style?
No, I'm not referring to your wardrobe. We all have a decision-making style which falls into one (sometimes more) of the following categories, depending on the situation:
- Decisive / Autocratic: The decision is made independently on your own without input from the team.
- Hierarchic / Delegating: You may not be part of the decision-making process, but ask to be informed of the decision, which once made, will stand firm.
- Flexible / Consultative: You will ask your team for constructive input and their opinions, be it either individually or as a group, but you make the final call.
- Integrative / Team: You pull your team together to discuss the situation and decide as a whole. You facilitate reaching a consensus where everyone agrees to support the decision.
That's generally how humans make decisions, very often on the fly. In an ideal world, most would like to think they practice being Integrative or even Flexible. But imagine doing that for every choice you make, particularly when it comes to dealing with data at work. And if you're a CMO or any other C-suite, that's a lot of time to be taken to come to a decision.
